Would a Metroidvania game for iOS still hold up to my old expectations and renewed interest for multi-touch based adventures and puzzles?Īquaria is set in the underwater world of, well, Aquaria, and you control this creature called Naija that, suddenly, starts having visions and wants to find out more about her past, her origins, and the destiny she’s up against.

So it was with a mix of curiosity, excitement and, after years of non-playing, apprehension that I approached Aquaria for iPad, a porting of a popular, award-winning PC game.

In fact, I’ve only recently started to get back into portable gaming thanks to iOS devices and a Nintendo 3DS, which I acquired last week (but more on this in another story). I bought a Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 but never really got to fully enjoy them. But I loved the so-called “Metroidvania” games – characterized by large maps with areas that you have to explore and unlock through upgrades to your main character, 2D side-scrolling, crazy hard boss fights and generally decent plots – so I kept playing.Īs I grew up and got a job, I found to have less time for gaming. That meant going through Symphony Of The Night on the PSX, and other less inspired titles for Nintendo’s GBA. I loved Metroid.Īt the same time, I tried to explore other offerings from the genre that Metroid and Castlevania nurtured.

I even went through that pain that was Metroid Prime Hunters for the original DS. In the years that followed, I played Super Metroid on an emulator (somehow, I lost my original SNES cables) with a much better understanding of its plot, and all the Metroids that were released on the Game Boy Advance (Fusion and Zero) Game Cube and Wii (the Prime series). I did love Super Metroid, and even if the challenge was a little too hard for a six year old kid, I got away convinced that games like Super Metroid were the ones I liked. Stunt Race FX eventually got reconsidered as a “gem” from the SNES era years later, but I remember I didn’t like it much back then. Sure enough, I got a European SNES for my birthday with some games to go with it, including Stunt Race FX and Super Metroid. I didn’t know much about video games back then, but I knew that after Nintendo’s Game Boy I wanted the SNES. What do you think of Dolphin’s new Integrated GBA? Let us know in the comments. When I was 6, my parents bought me a Super Nintendo. Give it a read if you’re interested in the technical story behind the feature. The Dolphin team has detailed the development of the feature over at their website (linked below). Better yet, the Integrated GBA works with Dolphin’s netplay feature so that friends can play these games with each other across the Internet. It also allows players to enjoy multiplayer games like Four Swords Adventure and Crystal Chronicles.

The new software unlocks popular features that were previously locked away, like Wind Waker’s Tingle Tuner. The result is a tiny pop-up on the side of the game window that replicates a connected Game Boy Advance with astounding accuracy. Dolphin’s new Integrated GBA feature seems to iron out almost all of those wrinkles by directly integrating the GBA emulator instance into Dolphin itself. There have been solutions to this problem in the past, but they all came with caveats or were generally buggy. Naturally, this presents a problem for GameCube emulation: how do you imitate a connected Game Boy Advance and make the emulated GBA talk to the GameCube emulator? Others (like The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles) require a connected Game Boy Advance to control and play the game. The developers behind the emulator call the feature “Integrated GBA,” and it works fairly well.Ĭertain games (like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon Colosseum) unlock extra features when a Game Boy Advance is connected to the console.

Now, the latest update to the popular GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin allows players to emulate that experience.ĭolphin version 5.0-14690 can integrate an instance of the mGBA emulator directly into the emulator. The compact Nintendo console included a bevy of unique features one of these was the ability to hook up a Game Boy Advance (GBA) to control some games or unlock bonus content in others.

In many ways, the Nintendo GameCube was ahead of its time.
